【炼狱能成天堂】
a king was embarked on board a ship, which also carried a slave.
国王带着一个奴隶乘坐在一条船上
the boy had never been at sea, nor experienced the inconvenience of a ship.
奴隶从未出过海，也从未经历过坐船之苦。
he set up a weeping and wailing, and all his limbs were in a state of trepidation, and, however much they soothed him, he was not to be pacified.
他开始哭泣、悲号，四肢不停地颤抖。人们想尽办法安抚他，但他仍无法平静。
the king’s pleasure party was disconcerted by him; but they offered no help.
国王原本愉快的心情被他搅得不安起来，但人们却束手无策。
on board that ship there was a physician. he said to the king; “if you will order it, i can manage to silence him.”
一个医师也在船上，他对国王说：“如果允许让我一试的话，我有办法让他平静。”
the king replied, “it will be an act of great favor.”
国王说道：“那就太好了。”
the physician directed that they throw the boy into the sea, and after he had plunged repeatedly, they seized him by hair of the head and drew him close to be ship,
医师吩咐他们把奴隶扔到海里，让他反复沉浮几次后，才抓住他的头发把他拖到船边
where he grabbed the rudder with both hands and, scrambling up on to the deck, slunk into a corner and sat down quiet.
他双手紧紧抓住船舷，爬上甲板，缩到一个角落里坐下来，不再吭声了。
the king, pleased with what he saw, said, “what art is there in this?”
国王很满意，问道：“这是什么道理?”
the physician replied, “originally he had not experienced the danger of being drowned, and undervalued the safety of being in a ship;
医师回答说：“先前他没有经历溺水的危险，所有不珍惜在船上的安全
just as a person is aware of the preciousness of health only when he is overtaken with the calamity of sickness.”

【The Old Cat】
An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.
Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young."
【译文】
老猫
一位老妇有只猫，这只猫很老，它跑不快了，也咬不了东西，因为它年纪太大了。一天，老猫发现一只老鼠，它跳过去抓这只老鼠，然而，它咬不住这只老鼠。因此，老鼠从它的嘴边溜掉了，因为老猫咬不了它。
于是，老妇很生气，因为老猫没有把老鼠咬死。她开始打这只猫，猫说：“不要打你的老仆人，我已经为你服务了很多年，而且还愿意为你效劳，但是，我实在太老了，对年纪大的不要这么无情，要记住老年人在年青时所做过的有益的事情。”

“停!站住不要动瞅口果你再走一步，就会有一个砖块掉到你的头上砸死你。”

这名男子停住了，一个大砖块就掉在他的面前。

这名男子非常惊讶。

An Army brat was boasting about his father to a Navy brat.
"My dad is an engineer. He can do everything. Do you know the Alps?"
"Yes," said the Navy brat.
"My dad has built them."
Then the naval kid spoke: "And do you know the Dead Sea?"
"Yes."
"It's my dad who's killed it!"
一个年轻的陆军士兵跟一个海军士兵吹牛，说他爸多么了不起。

The Thirsty Dog
A dog is very thirsty. But he only sees some empty pails. There is no water in them. The dog goes on looking for water. He comes to a small house. There is a girl in it. The girl goes out with a pail. “She goes to a well,” the dog thinks and follows her. The dog is right. The girl comes to a well and puts down the pail, and the pail is full of water, there the girl goes back to her house.
“ Water! Great!” the dog says and runs to the well. He jumps into the well without thought.”
The water is good. The dog is happy and drinks much. But he can’t jump out of the well. He waits and waits. But no one comes. “I’m hungry now. I must go out,” he thinks.
At the time a thirsty goat comes to the well. He looks at the water and the dog. “Is the water good?” the goat asks. “ Of course. Come down,” the dog says. Then the goat jumps into the well, too. Then dog is happy. He jumps on the goat’s back and jumps out of the well.
The dog has a look at the goat and says, “Goodbye!” Then he leaves.
一只口渴的狗
有一只狗口很渴，他只找到一些空空的水桶，里面没有水。他继续找水。他来到一座小房子前面。房子里住着一个小姑娘。小姑娘拎着只水桶出来了。 “她要去打水。”狗想道，并跟在她后面。果然不错，小姑娘来到一口井边，把水桶放入井里，水桶水满了。然后小姑娘回去了。
“水!太好了!”狗叫着跑过去。他想也没想就跳下井去了。
井水真的不错。狗可高兴了。喝了许多水，但是他没有办法跳出来了。他等了好久，但是没有人来。 “我饿了，我得出去。”他想着。
这时候一只口渴的山羊到井边来了，他看了看井水和这只狗。“这水好和吗?”山羊问狗：“当然了。快下来吧。“狗回答说。于是山羊也跳到井里了。狗高兴极了。他跳上山羊的背，又跳出了水井。
狗看了一眼山羊说声：“再见。”就跑开了。
